Data security is an ever-growing field in the IT universe. With the number of viruses and ransomware making the rounds, you could get the feeling that your company information is never truly safe. The backing up of data is one the most important, yet often overlooked, requirements of any IT-based platform. Here is an overview of how we handle this critical part of your business.
Dotcloud has a very meticulous approach to disaster recovery. Your company data is hosted on a storage solution that is built to withstand a variety of threats, as well as physical hardware failure. In the event of a possible ransomware cyber attack, our sophisticated software identifies the threat and blocks it before any harm can occur. Should the software fail to detect the threat, we move on to the disaster recovery stage.
If any data encryption has occurred through a type of ransomware like the CryptoLocker, we identify and remove the malicious software; and should the situation deem it necessary, we revert back to the most recent backup of your server. Backups run on a daily basis and we operate on a 7-day server replica history, which means that a daily snapshot of your data is kept for as far back as a week. This allows us to choose a specific day to revert back to should the need arise.
We know that certain files on your server might need to be kept for long periods of time; for example, lawyers need to keep record of specific files for as long as 5 years. An archive storage solution is created for these kinds of files so that the drive space and performance of your server remains unaffected. We also provide a shared or hosted SQL solution, where the SQL server is hosted in our cloud environment. Our back-end technicians handle all backups relevant for frequently used software (like GhostConvey, Pastel or other applications that make use of SQL databases) on a regular basis.
Should your data be located on-premises, we recommend a redundant solution by storing your data in 3 locations: on the physical server or storage medium; on a separate storage medium such as a network attached storage (NAS) device or external drive; and in an offsite location, using offsite backup software that will backup your data incrementally. Once a week, a full backup of your data is made, whilst there are daily incremental backups that identify any changes made to the files that are stored on the server. These changes are then saved to the various backup locations. In this way, should one of the backup mediums fail, there are two remaining backups – ensuring the failed backup medium can be restored without running the risk of losing any data.
With our hosted cloud solutions, each employee or user’s data is kept in an environment where it can be backed up and stored without the need for third party software on each user’s machine: freeing up local resources and giving users complete peace of mind. Should the laptop or desktop computer fail for whatever reason, all the user’s documents are safely stored on the cloud server and can easily be re-accessed via a remote desktop app or shortcut on their desktop.
