WHAT IS A SUCESS? WHAT DOES IT EVEN MEAN?
WHAT IS A SUCESS? WHAT DOES IT EVEN MEAN?
In a world where change is becoming a lifestyle and accelerated at a pace that very few people can fathom, that might be a more complex question than say, 10 years ago.
A few opinions of well known “successful” people
“It’s cool to be a nerd. There’s a general understanding that smartphones didn’t come from jocks. The digital age was foreseen by a group of short-sleeved, buttoned-down, white-shirted guys and their female equivalents designing the very stuff that’s now ubiquitous.” – J.J. Abrams
“There’s no such thing as overnight success. That’s my concern with a show like American Idol. It encourages the false belief that there’s a kind of magic, that you can be ‘discovered.’ That may be the way television works, but it’s not the way the world works. Rising to the top of any field requires an enormous amount of dedication, focus, drive, talent, and 99 factors that they don’t show on television. It’s not simply about being picked. Which, by the way, is why very few of the anointed winners on American Idol have gone on to true success. Most have flamed out and gone away. That should tell us something.” – Malcolm Gladwell
“I’ve been very lucky. All I wanted was to pay the rent. Then these characters took off and suddenly there were Hulk coffee mugs and Iron Man lunch boxes and The Avengers sweatshirts everywhere. Money’s okay, but what I really like is working.” – Stan Lee
“Stop chasing the money and start chasing the passion.” — Tony Hsieh
Strong words, so how do we view and measure success at Dotcloud? Simple answer, with short but significant sprints. Let me explain a bit of history.
WE GO BACK A LONG WAY
Dotcloud’s history dates back many moons ago. Louis and Stephan met on the very first day of primary school. A friendship was born that would carry on through school and ultimately end up in a business partnership that would grow from strength to strength.
Louis started as an entrepreneur at a young age creating business and building client relationships with a significant user base in the IT industry. LDP Plumbum was born and was making waves in IT circles in Gauteng.
Stephan started his IT career in the corporate world working his way from the bottom of the food chain up to management level. The free and forward thinking was not the best fit for legacy corporates which made it inevitable for Stephan to leave the corporate world and start his own IT company. The ITStudio was born and through personal service and great IT solutions the company soon had a significant client base.
Both companies focused on traditional IT solutions, for example installing and maintaining networks, supplying hardware and software, web development.
We collaborated on a few projects and started brainstorming about the cloud and hosted solutions.
With the release of broadband internet in South Africa, cloud computing became a real possibility. Not being afraid to test the waters and a brand new avenue Stephan and Louis combined forces and introduced small presence with a single server.
Since the very first Cloud installation, the service was sold as a fully customised hosted service, which was a first in the country. We provided the only service that we were aware of that took all your on-premise services and moved it to the internet/cloud in a super secure environment. Once your service moved onto our service we would even take care of your first line application support.
DOTCLOUD IS BORN
Within weeks the server was fully populated with client services. It was clearly time to combine skills and clients, and in the weeks to come Dotcloud was officially born.
With the success of the Dotcloud hosted solutions the vision very quickly expanded into new technologies that would complement our solutions and provide our clients with a complete end to end solution.
Our employment focus started changing from employing technical staff to highly skilled graphics, engineering and developers.
Our development and graphics team expanded and we started developing custom backend and web-based software. With the birth of the smartphone, this quickly expanded to specialised solutions for mobile, including apps for popular mobile operating systems like IOS and Android.
#AFTERNOW – LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
Always staying ahead of the curve and focusing on what we call the afternow, we started focusing on the new buzzword in IT circles, IOT or Internet of Things. We were intrigued by the endless applications and capabilities of IOT. We soon started adding our own flavour and developed our own platform based on existing chip technologies.
We are now perfectly positioned to supply a fully customised and completely scalable, end to end solution for any industry or any size company. Anything from a basic website to fully customised back end and front end with our hardware plugged into the solution, hosted on our platforms. On top of this, we have an awesome hand-picked team to tackle and support any solution presented to them.
So after that historic take on the foundation that today form Dotcloud, what is our take on success?
Short but significant sprints. We started out creating a cloud company where many companies found a secure stable platform to run their businesses from. By transferring part or all of their IT needs to our cloud, they can now focus on what’s important, their business.
By creating a cloud platform, we not only created a secure hosting platform for our clients, but we also developed the perfect environment for future technologies such as IOT and big data and analytics.
Our success is simple. We love technology and more importantly technological advances. We are futurists. Our success is in creating and understanding the technology that is current but completely aware and ready for what lies ahead. #Afternow.
Most of all; our success is in the people that enable us to make this happen. Through years of friendship, we believe we have created a friendly culture where people around us love what they do, with a hunger for acceleration.
Let’s design your afternow.
